When love, history, and culture come together, the result is unforgettable. SuRekha and Josie’s Polaris Hall wedding photos in Portland was full of joy and heritage. I have known SuRekha’s family for years, so it was an honor to photograph such a special occasion.
A Venue with History: Polaris Hall in Portland
Polaris Hall, first known as the “Star Ballroom,” was built in 1930. A diverse, working-class group created it as a gathering space for friendship, love, and truth. Later, women purchased the building and ran it as the North Star Ballroom for decades. Today, it stands as a vintage venue with rich character, perfect for weddings like SuRekha and Josie’s.
Blending Cultures and Traditions
One of the most beautiful parts of this wedding was the mix of cultures. SuRekha has both Indian and Hispanic roots. Josie also comes from a Hispanic background. Days before the wedding, SuRekha had henna applied to her hands and feet. Their celebration honored tradition while staying true to their love story.
A Joyful Surprise
During planning, SuRekha and Josie discovered they were expecting a baby girl in November. SuRekha quickly replaced her original sari with a gown that fit her growing bump. The sari still has special meaning, and we plan to take portraits in it after the baby arrives. This joyful surprise added even more love to their day.
Dancing the Night Away
Pregnancy did not keep SuRekha off the dance floor. She and Josie danced late into the night with family and friends. The music, laughter, and energy filled every corner of Polaris Hall. Guests partied until the venue finally had to close the doors. It was a night no one wanted to end.
An Honor to Capture
Photographing this wedding was deeply personal. SuRekha’s mother, Ritu, is a close friend, and being asked to capture her daughter’s big day was a privilege. Weddings like this remind me why I love photography. It’s about celebrating love, preserving family stories, and creating heirlooms that will last for generations.
