Romantic Film Engagement Session at Villa Catalana Cellars

ENGAGEMENT / COUPLES
Villa Catalana Cellars Engagement

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when a location, an outfit, and the right medium all align. For Makenna and Sander’s engagement session, we headed to Villa Catalana Cellars. Located between Canby and Oregon City, this estate feels less like the Pacific Northwest and more like a sun-drenched sanctuary in Catalonia, Spain.

As a photographer, my goal is always to capture the feeling of a day. To do that for Makenna and Sander, I utilized a hybrid photography approach, shooting on both professional digital bodies and vintage film cameras to achieve a timeless, editorial look.

Villa Catalana Cellars engagement session featuring Spanish Romanesque architecture and vineyard views.

The Inspiration: 12th Century Spanish Architecture

Unlike many vineyards in the Willamette Valley that lean toward Italian styles, Villa Catalana was inspired by San Clemente de Tahull, a 12th-century Romanesque church in Spain. The result is a backdrop of textured stonework and dramatic arches that perfectly suit a classic, vintage aesthetic.

The gardens further enhance this Mediterranean feel. We wandered through rows of Italian Cypress, olive trees, and exotic palms. Because the venue books sessions after the tasting room closes to the public, we had the entire grounds to ourselves, allowing Makenna and Sander to relax and enjoy the scenery in total privacy.

Styling the Session: The Cream Corset Maxi Dress

Makenna curated a look that was both modern and nostalgic. She chose a cream-colored corset pleated maxi dress that complemented the stone tones of the Villa. To add a layer of editorial movement, she added a long, flowing scarf. This simple accessory transformed the photos, catching the light and the breeze as they walked through the vineyard.

Styling Tip: When shooting at a venue with structured architecture, choose a dress with movement (like pleats or silk) and consider a scarf or veil to create a beautiful, ethereal contrast.

The Art of Hybrid Photography: Film & Digital

To capture the “romantic and vintage” vibe Makenna requested, I knew this had to be a hybrid session. By using a film camera alongside digital, I was able to capture the unmistakable soul of analog—the soft grain and creamy skin tones that digital sensors simply cannot replicate.

The “slow art” of film photography mirrors the philosophy of Villa Catalana itself—a place designed to help us slow down and appreciate the present moment. The result is a gallery that feels trend-proof and deeply personal.

Planning Your Oregon Vineyard Engagement

If you are considering Villa Catalana Cellars for your engagement or wedding photography, here are a few expert tips:

  • The Wine Tasting: Start your session with a private tasting. It’s a perfect way to transition into the experience and settle any camera nerves.
  • The Conservatory: The rare plant conservatory is a stunning indoor backup option that features tropical plants and unique cacti.
  • The Light: The light-colored stonework acts as a natural reflector, making this one of the best locations in Oregon for soft, flattering skin tones.
